Breaking-Government Decides to Ban All Unlisted Social Media Platforms

Kathmandu: The government has decided to ban all social media platforms that have not even made contact for listing. A meeting held at the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology on Thursday, under the leadership of Minister for Communications and Information Technology Prithvi Subba Gurung, decided to ban such platforms after the specified deadline expired, a source told TechPana.

By 12 midnight on Wednesday, the final deadline set by the government, only five social media platforms had completed the listing process. The ministry has now decided to shut down all other platforms.

On the proposal of the Ministry of Communications, the Cabinet meeting on August 25 had given social media platforms a seven-day deadline to be listed with the ministry. Following that decision, the Ministry of Communications issued a public notice on August 28, again setting a seven-day deadline for unlisted platforms.

The government had also instructed the ministry to gradually deactivate any platforms that failed to get listed or even establish contact within the given period.

According to the Ministry of Communications, only TikTok, Viber, Nimbuzz, BitTalk, and Poppo Live have been listed so far. After being banned earlier, Telegram has applied for listing, and the ministry is currently reviewing the application.
