Gagan Thapa: Government Wrong to Ban Social Media

Kathmandu: Nepali Congress General Secretary Gagan Thapa has strongly opposed the government’s decision to deactivate social media platforms that are not listed with the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology. He called the decision misguided and demanded that it be reconsidered immediately.

In a long post on Facebook, Thapa wrote that the government is heading the “wrong way.” He said that although the Supreme Court has asked for legal arrangements to regulate and control objectionable content on social media, that does not mean shutting down platforms based on guidelines. Instead, he emphasized that proper legislation should be enacted as soon as possible. He reminded that a bill related to social media is currently under consideration in the National Assembly and urged the government to prioritize passing it.

General Secretary Thapa stressed that social media has become an important space for citizens’ freedom of expression, public debate, and holding the government accountable. “Social relations, entrepreneurship, and the digital economy are connected to it, as well as various aspects of people’s daily lives,” he said. “Any restriction on these networks restricts freedom of expression and the right to information.”

He also warned that shutting down social media is directly tied to cyber risks and urged the government to approach the issue with balance and prudence.
