After Ban, X and WeChat Reach Out to Nepal Government

Kathmandu: Elon Musk’s social network X has contacted the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology for a listing. The platform wrote to the ministry’s official email requesting the documents required for the process.

Ministry spokesperson Gajendra Kumar Thakur confirmed that X has formally asked what details and documents are necessary. “After the ban, X sent us an email through official channels asking for the requirements. I am now responding to that email, and we are sending them all the details needed for listing,” Thakur told TechPana.

Similarly, Chinese messaging app WeChat has also reached out to the ministry expressing interest in listing, though it has not yet submitted any official documents. “WeChat has contacted us with interest, but no details or documents have been sent so far,” Thakur said.

Hamro Patro has also sent the ministry additional documents after being included in the government’s ban list on Thursday. Thakur said that while the first submission was incomplete, Hamro Patro has since provided all the required paperwork.

On Thursday, a meeting chaired by Communications Minister Prithvi Subba Gurung decided to block 26 unlisted social media networks. The ministry then instructed the Nepal Telecommunication Authority to implement the ban, which was enforced through mobile and internet service providers. Since then, platforms including Facebook, X, Instagram, and YouTube have gradually stopped operating in Nepal.

The government has said the ban will be lifted immediately through the Telecommunications Authority once any blocked platform completes the listing process.
